Well, you know I work real hard for what I got.
It ain’t much, but I don’t ask a lot, I wanna know why?
Why can’t a dog be strong, when his master’s gone too long?
You know, yesterday morning, the damage was done
Three piles on the floor, instead of the usual one
I want to know why, why can’t a dog be strong, when his master’s gone too long?
You meet up with some old friends and have you a time
You wind up laughing and joking, and drinking and talking and smoking,
You look at the clock, it’s a quarter to one. By the time you get home,
It’s much too late; the newspaper’s clean but the living room ain’t.
I want to know why, why can’t a dog be strong, when his master’s gone too long?
You know a dog, a dog’s supposed to be a man’s best friend
Well, that might be true, but only with one end
I want to know why can’t a dog be strong, when his master’s gone too long?
He’s a good dog, a good dog you can tell by his eyes
But his eyes ain’t the problem, I think it’s his size
I want to know why, why can’t a BIG dog be strong,
When his master’s gone too long?
Why?

I can see in the distance; see that look in your eyes and
I’m sure you’ll be saying something. I’m sure it’ll be a big surprise
But I’ve been wrong before…
You deny you’re deceitful; I don’t think that you’re right and
We’ve agreed to say maybe; maybe that’s all we’ve got left tonite.
How the hell did we wind up here?
‘Cause I’ve been waiting all this time for you
While you’ve been saving, saving all the world
That’s what you do
But every step away, brings me back to you again..
And I look in the mirror; I just see an old fool
And I should’ve learned something by now.
I learned that I should’ve stayed with you;
I learned that I should’ve stayed in school.
‘Cause I’ve been waiting, while you’ve been saving,
And we’ve been, we’ve been drowning in this love..
I said, ‘Baby, I’ll be leaving you…maybe I’m not such a fool
Maybe, maybe, maybe I’ll just get over you. Maybe.
Maybe I’ll do something else; maybe I’ll love you less.
Maybe, maybe, maybe I just won’t love you at all….
Maybe…

Have you ever seen the stars (from high above)?
Felt the rain upon your skin (from deep within)?
Felt a hunger, you cannot feed?
Would you take a bullet? For me?
Then you’d know love, then you’d know love
Then you’d know love, then you’d know this
Was never love at all.
Giving more than what you had (to give before)
Colors in a different shade of new, (are they washing over you)?
Feel the pulse pound and grow?
Can you feel it in your soul?
Then you’d know love….
Never ever love…
And as we grow our separate ways (from a common seed)
And as you cry yourself to sleep, (we can blame it all on me)
Feel the pulse pound and grow (can you feel the innocence in your soul)?
Then you’d know love…then you’d know that this was never love at all
Never love….it was something else…
Never, ever love……

I ’ll be there in a moment my friend; there in a flash and out of nowhere
I’ll be there in a moment or less; feet out of step, catching my breath.
I’ll be there if ou say, you need me today;
I’ll be there, bringing my smile and my heart…
And I’ll work you good medicine just like a friend to a friend; …
If I can….
Well, I live in the city; clouds are born everyday. Everyday.
And it never rains while you’re looking up. They just seem to say:
“Try to care…try to care…try to care…You just try.”
Well, I’ve tried and I got myself drenched to the bone…”Dress for rain!”
And I’ll work you good medicine just like a friend to a friend,
If I Can….

Well, she’s sent you the message that it’s all been said and done.
She’s been looking for inspiration; Lord knows she’s found some
Don’t you know? Do you care? She’s got somethin’ going on….
Well, she tells me that she loves you; wishes you could grow and change
Wishes you’d feel the passion and steal her heart again.
Don’t you know? Do you care? She’s got somethin’ going on and on and on…
She’s got somethin’…..going on.
Yeah, it’s the same old story; been told ten thousand different ways.
I know you do not listen, but it’s not just words she says. Not just words…
Don’t you know? Do you care? She’s got somethin’ going on…
She’s got somethin’ going on.

It’s always at your house; when we’re together
Not much for me there; just you and your body and your mind.
And it did not matter that I was mistaken. You did not want me.
You did not want me around.
Hmmmmm, got the message and I’m gone…
It must have been something that I was saying
Could have been any one of a dozen dumb things..
Hmmmmm, got the message…and I’m gone.
Now I’m reflecting; I sit in a hallway
Outside of a doorway, outside of your loving, loving.
Hmmmmm, got the message and I’m gone…
Always at your house; when we’re together
Not much for me there; just you and your body…..

I am just a lad of ten, I shine shoes for the men
My sister does their laundry and my mom, she sews and mends
Together we’re a family, together we’ll get by
Mom says soon we’ll leave the city and live out on a farm.
Some kids I know they go to school, they read and wear nice clothes
I shine their fathers’ shoes and haul their ash and bring them coal…
But father, why’d you go so soon? I’m sure you could have taught me
everything you knew.
And father, you could have asked, and I’d gone along,
You even left your favorite shoes at home..
Sometimes I think I’d like to sail those ships out on the bay
pointed towards the blue and gray and vanish in the haze
But Mr. Bob shines everyday and tips as well as most;
those sailing ships sink all the time (damn pirates off the coast!)
But father you left without the least goodbye,
Momma cried four days, the laundry piled high.
And father, you could have asked, and I’d gone along
You even left your favorite shoes at home.
And I am just a lad of ten….

I’ve been looking for some kind of sign; one that shows the way
I’ve been looking for the good love; Oh true love! I’d be willing to start today…
I’ve been looking for a girl like you, ooh! ooh! ooh!
I’ve been looking for a wide eyed, sweet, sweet smile
I’ve been looking, I’ve been looking for a while
Baby what’s wrong? Wasn’t I right for you? Was I not true enough?
Baby don’t go…wasn’t I right? Right? Right enough to know?
Yeah, wasn’t I right?
And I’ve really just been working lots and hanging with a few close friends
that call me now and then..
And I sit inside this bar and sing the blues, occasionally I take a shot or two to
gild the world again..
And you come walking over like an angel with that sassy smile
and the stars amp up to keep the balance right.
And I say, “Baby what’s wrong? Wasn’t I right for you? Was I not true enough?”
Baby don’t go..wasn’t I right? Right? Right enough to know?
Yeah, wasn’t I right?
yeah, yeah, yeah….

So you say you’ve got some funky business going down
I know, I know you’ve got not funky business on my side of town
Oh, your new lover makes you sing; I can hear the ringing in my ears..
I ain’t got no money, I ain’t got no high steppin’ shoes.
And music’s my main man, tho’ sometimes, sometimes it’s the blues..
And tho’ I got used to winning, got used to winning,
Losing’s nothing new.
You like your cocaine and your imported champagne wines
And there’s trouble in your mind and trouble’s where your bound.
And I need you and your troubles like a stick in the eye; watch the boy fly…
Now, I’m not gonna take no bus crosstown to see you again
‘Cause I know how you’re doing; yeah you and your high steppin’ friend
There’s nothin’ true no more; a man don’t have to live that poor…
So you say you’ve got some funky business going down
I know, I know you’ve got no funky business on my side of town.
Your new lover makes you sing; I can hear the ringing in my ears.
I can hear the ringing…
I can hear the ringing in my ears…..

Take it all baby, take all that you can get
Take it all baby, take all that you can get.
Don’t try to be nice to me;
you ain’t learned that one yet…
Well, I’m looking to the left, see me looking to the right
Well, I’m looking to the left, see me looking to the right,
Got no direction for me baby, no moves left for me tonight.
‘Cause them blues have got me, they got the hold on me
Them blues have got me, they got the hold on me.
Seems they’ve taken every place inside,
you used to be…
Well, I’m running loose, see me running scared
I’m running loose, I’m running scared
And nothin’ come from nothin’ baby
And nothin’ don’t feel so bad…

My heart reads like an open book;
People mark the pages and the time they took.
Maybe gleen a little of something superfical
Maybe even risk a second look; a second look?
So I’ve placed myself upon a shelf and learned to wait…
I’ve been borrowed by the best
And I’ve been loaned and not returned.
And it’s just a book with pages left to turn;
It’s a book of love and it’s all I’ve yet to learn.
But I’ve never been, no I’ve never been,
No, I’ve never read like this before…
